Our Story

The Legacy of Prince Hall

On March 6, 1775, Prince Hall and fourteen other free Black men were initiated into Freemasonry by members of a British military lodge in Boston, Massachusetts. When they were denied full recognition by colonial lodges, they pursued and received a charter from the Grand Lodge of England in 1784, establishing African Lodge No. 459.

From that charter grew what is now known as Prince Hall Freemasonry — a tradition rooted in faith, education, discipline, charity, and the uplift of our communities.

Prince Hall Freemasonry has always stood for:

• Moral leadership

• Brotherhood and accountability

• Community service

• Self-improvement

• Economic empowerment

It has produced leaders, pastors, educators, soldiers, business owners, and public servants who have shaped our communities with integrity.

Prince Hall Freemasonry in Illinois

Prince Hall Masonry expanded into Illinois as part of its mission to organize men of character into structured lodges committed to service and brotherhood.

The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Illinois governs lodges throughout the state, ensuring that each lodge upholds the ancient landmarks, principles, and traditions of the Craft.

Through structured ritual, officer development, and community outreach, Illinois Prince Hall Masons continue the work that began in 1775 — building men who build communities.
